Choosing between silicone and acrylic render is one of the most common decisions homeowners face when planning an external wall insulation project or a straightforward re-render. Both are modern thin-coat systems that leave traditional sand-and-cement far behind, yet they behave quite differently once they are on the wall. What Thin-Coat Renders Actually Are

Silicone and acrylic renders both belong to the thin-coat family. Rather than being mixed from loose sand and cement on site, they arrive as ready-blended, polymer-modified products that are applied in a thin decorative layer over a reinforced basecoat. The colour is mixed all the way through the material, so there is no separate painting stage and no paint film to peel later.

That polymer content is the key difference from older render types. It allows the finished surface to flex with the small, constant movements every building makes as temperatures change, which is why thin-coat systems are sometimes simply called flexible renders. A rigid render resists that movement and eventually loses; a flexible one absorbs it without cracking.

Within the thin-coat family, the resin binder is what separates one product from another. Acrylic renders are bound with acrylic polymers alone, while silicone renders combine silicone and acrylic resins with mineral fillers and pigments. That single change in chemistry drives almost every practical difference between the two.

The Case for Acrylic Render

Acrylic render is the value option in the thin-coat range, and it earns its place on merit rather than compromise.

  • Impact resistance. Acrylic produces a notably tough surface, which makes it a sensible pick for walls that take knocks: driveways, alleyways, ground-floor commercial frontages, or anywhere bikes, bins and buggies pass close by.
  • Colour performance. The acrylic binder holds pigment extremely well. It resists UV light and does not fade over time, so bolder and more saturated shades stay looking the way they did on day one.
  • Lower cost. Because the binder is cheaper to produce, acrylic systems typically come in below their silicone equivalents on material price, while still delivering the crack resistance and through-colour finish that define thin-coat renders.
  • Substrate versatility. Properly prepared, acrylic bonds to a wide range of backgrounds, from block, brick and stone through to concrete and boarded surfaces.

The trade-off is breathability. Acrylic is the least vapour-permeable of the thin-coat options, meaning moisture generated inside the building has a harder time escaping through the wall. On a modern cavity-wall property with good ventilation that may never matter. On an older solid-wall home, or any wall with a history of damp, it is a genuine drawback.

The Case for Silicone Render

Silicone render sits at the top of the thin-coat range, and the blended silicone-acrylic chemistry gives it three headline advantages.

Breathability. Silicone render is highly vapour-permeable. Water vapour from everyday living can pass out through the render rather than being trapped in the wall, which protects the structure and any insulation behind it. For solid-wall houses and external wall insulation systems, where managing moisture is critical, this is the property that matters most.

Self-cleaning. The silicone content makes the cured surface hydrophobic, so rainwater beads up and runs off rather than soaking in. As it runs, it carries surface dirt with it, and the drier surface gives algae and other organic growth far less to work with. The practical result is a facade that stays clean for years with minimal maintenance, where a less water-repellent finish would slowly green over on its shaded elevations.

Flexibility and longevity. Silicone renders are recognised across the industry for their flexibility, absorbing thermal and structural movement without cracking. Traditional sand-and-cement render is still the cheapest way to coat a wall, but the gap in performance is wide. If pure silicone stretches the budget but acrylic's breathability worries you, there is a middle path. It gives up some of the self-cleaning performance of pure silicone, but for many installers it has become the everyday workhorse precisely because it balances cost and capability so well. It is worth adding that in cold weather none of these wet products should go on the wall: thin-coat renders are applied between roughly 5°C and 25°C, never in rain or when frost is expected within 24 hours. Which System Is Right for Your Project?

There is no single correct answer, but the decision usually falls out quickly from three questions.

  • What is the wall build-up? Solid walls, older properties and any external wall insulation system need to breathe — choose silicone, or at minimum a silicone hybrid.
  • How long will you keep the property? The longer your horizon, the more silicone's durability and near-zero maintenance repay the extra upfront cost. For a shorter hold or a rental refresh, acrylic's value is hard to argue with.
  • What does the wall have to survive? For exposed, damp-prone or north-facing elevations, silicone's self-cleaning surface wins. For walls that take physical punishment, acrylic's impact resistance is the standout.
